Col. Fitzwilliam would you marry him? 2008/04/27 17:37
Here is my question....Knowing that Col. Fitzwilliam is handsome and from good family and connections. He is the close cousin to Mr. Darcy and has a love of country, would he then be a good husband if he were to fall in love and not just marry out of obligation which is what he fears will happen in his life.

He had been around with many women we assume but he is quite the gentlemen unlike Wickham. In my own heart I feel that as Miss Georgiana Darcy comes of age and is brought out in society that Col. Fitzwilliam will see her in a different light. That she will be attracted to him and comfortable around him. He is of good family, her brother loves him, she can converse easily and finds he is diverting and amusing. I would pose that these two characters would do quite well married. Would you agree or disagree on that? Do you think that Fitzwilliam Darcy would allow the match as the age difference would be 12-14 years?

Fitzwiliam Darcy is 12 years older the Georgianna and Colonel Fitzwilliam is older then Darcy. Many complain that Colonel Brandon is too old for Marianne but seem to feel Colonel Fitzwilliam is perfect for Georgiana. I never understood that-since we see the same age differance.

Now there are two other reasons I feel this is not a "perfect" couple. 1) I always felt JA was telling us in P & P that Colonel Fitzwilliam was storngly attracted to Lizzie, in love with her even, but felt he could not marry her as neither he or she had money.

Would he want to be Lizzie's brother inlaw? I don't think so.

2) Lady Catherine may have had her heart set on Darcy but I could see Colonel Fitzwilliam being her second choice for Anne. Anne is an heiress, with much more then Georgiana who inherits 30,000 pounds not a mansion like Rosings. Anne had Rosings and money and chances are much more then 30,000 pounds.

Plus the Colonel would have at least some affection for his cousin, she is the heiress he needs, and since he can't have Lizzie EVER since she now belongs to Darcy, why not?

I never considered Fitzwilliam marrying Anne. But it makes perfect sense. Lady Catherine is well aware that her daughter is sickly and will not likely have a coming out. Fitzwilliam is resigned to marrying a woman with money. Why not Anne? I'm sure that after Darcy marries, Lady Catherine would work quickly to secure the marriage of Anne to Fitzwilliam.

Yes, Georgianna would be a good wife for Fitzwilliam. (Berdoll handled this well in her book.) But I think that Fitzwilliam could be married off to Anne first. When she dies in childbirth perhaps, he would then be free to marry Georgiana who would be maturer and better ready for such a union.
