Response to the Pride and Perserverance speech 2008/02/22 00:16
Well this certainly was a well written speech. I don't know if I agree that Mansfield Park is her darkest novel. She did make many valid points however that prove that Jane Austen does not deserve to be put in the same category as today's chic lit nor do her heroines. I agreed with her point that Austen's heroines rise above the heroines of today's chic lit by their shrewd observations society, quick wit, and intelligence. However not all characters in today's chic lit are at the same level of intelligence of Bridget Jones, many of them rise far above her in intelligence. I got the impression that Mansfield Park was her favourite novel, and although I enjoyed her dissection of it, it would have been nice to have a similar dissection of Austen's other novels.
