Would you see a sequel to Pride and Prejudice 2008/04/27 17:28
Would anyone pay to see a sequel to Pride and Prejudice? Would you use one of the many sequel books out there as the adaptation? If so which one?

Would you use the same actors from the silver screen KK and MM or would you try to see if you could get Colin Firth and a new Elizabeth along with a new ensable of actors and actresses? Who would you choose for which part?

Food for thought and a long discussion I would hope

Why not cvolin firth and Jennifer Ehle?

I think if Andrew Davies wrote the screenplay and did not adapt it from any of the sequels I have read, possibly. I think he would do a better job writting a sequel then any I have read anyway.

So many of the sequels did not follow what logicailly that Jane Austen wrote.

To me, it has always made sense to me that Colonel Fitzwilliam would have married Anne Debourgh. In the book, the colonel told Lizzie he needed to marry an heirness.

I could see him as Lady Cathrine's second choice for Anne, and since his cousin is an heiress why not marry Anne?

And he can't have Lizzie for sure since she now belongs to Darcy- from P & P the novel, I got the impression that the Colonel and Lizzie were attracted to each other-I always felt that is why he told Lizzie that he must marry an heiress-so as not to "lead Lizzie on". I can see him marrying Anne not only for money, but also because he can't have the woman he loves; and the fact he probally would have some affection and pity for his cousin- so why not marry her?

Jane Austen told her family -when they asked her what happened to Kitty and Mary aftr the nove ended-that Kitty Bennett married a minister and Mary married a clerk in Uncle Phillip's office.

but I am yet to read a sequel that has these 3 things happen.
to me, these three things are logical to happen next.

I think if the sequel was written and directed well, I think a sequel would be fun! But I would definitely want MM as Darcy since I'm a huge fan of his

I like plainjanegal's suggestion for Andrew Davies and for following how JA wrote it

I also think that it would make sense that Colonel Fitzwilliam and Anne DeBourgh would marry, and in the sequel, Mr. Darcy's Diary, they do in fact marry. I was very happy to have that happen.

I was interested to read what you had written about what Jane had said happened to Kitty and Mary. I was always curious what happened to those two.

As for watching a sequel to Pride and Prejudice, I think that I would because I've read sequels, so why not check out a movie sequel also. I would really like to see either Colin Firth or Matthew MacFadyen as Mr. Darcy. They both played him very well in my view.

That is the only sequel I have read that it happened in though. I did enjoy Amanda Grange's novel and I will read some of her other's. I think Captain Wentworth would be the next one I would pick of her novels. She does novels all from the hero's view. Hey, I would love to see one from good ole Wiloughby's point of view! That would be interesting! and maybe one about Wickham too!
I have read two of another sequel author, Rebecca Collins. She is a good writter and she does not try to write in JA's style or writting (thank goodness- I HATE those) nor does she fill her books with sex to keep people's interest inher stories but she still did not do what I thought was logical to come next.

She actually marries off Colonel Fitzwillaim to Lizzy's Gardiner cousin about 5 or 6 years after Lizzy and Darcy marry. In P & P, the novel, we are told Lizzy's oldest girl cousin is 8 years old and we know Lizzy is 20 because she told Lady Catherine so. Darcy was 7 years older then Lizzy and the colonml was in his early 30's so this means this girl married a man over 20 years older then her. Possible in that time period? yes-but I do not find that "romantic". I would not marry a 15 year old girl to a man over 35 a sshe did. Even though it was done back then, we now call that statutory rape.

Ms Collins did marry off Kitty to a minister but Mary was left a spinster.
as good as I found her writting. Those few things did disapoint me.

As a moviegoer, I would pay to see a sequel, but I doubt the movie-makers would be willing to spend the money to make one. I think most of them are looking for a classic, known-money maker. A movie of one of Austen's novels has the potential to make money, but I doubt they would take the chance on a sequel not written by her.

But it would seem to me that is something that could be very well-done by PBS for a Masterpiece program, or even a series. I think they had really great ratings for the Complete Jane Austen they ran last year. They could piggy-back on that success with a Jane Austen sequel or two, or three ...

One can but hope.

(I'm excited to finally have fellow P&P fans to chat with)

I think that Colin Fith would be an excellent Darcy, however it would have to be a story that would allow the passage of time. As great as he still looks, he has aged. I would love the story to pick up a few years later. (Although he would probably not want play him AGAIN) This way a sequel would not have to go into great detail about what happened the moment after the story ends allowing for a plot twist or two. Besides, what happens on
the "Honeymoons" of the main characters should be left to ones own imagination!

The Literature lover and English teacher in me criges at the thought of a sequel to the fabulous Pride and Prejudice but I must admit I also find the idea strangely appealing!
It would have to be impeccably written and directed to be any good. Julian Fellowes would probably do a good job as would Stephen Fry both being Austen fans. The writer that springs straight to mind though is Emma Thompson her film adaptation of Sense and Sensibility was BRILLIANT! As she is a fab actor she could also take a role; maybe the role of Jane Bennett if it is going to be further on in the future (which I feel it really should be.) I think Firth is the only consideration for Darcy, his portrayal was so much better than Matthew Macfaydens, although after playing THE Mr Darcy in the BBC adaptation and Mark Dary twice in Bridget Jones I doubt he would be willing to take the role again!

I think Emma Thompson would make a wonderful middlegaged Lizzy and have Greta Schaii as Jane. Then Timothy Hutton (I think is his name) who did several James Bonds could be our Mr. Darcy or perhaps the actor who play John Jondice in the Andrew Davies Bleak House.
