Jane Austen Book Club on DVD 2008/02/10 15:15
Finally saw it last night (not sure how long its been out). Loved it!!!

It felt Austen. It had that warm carefully nurtured, everything in its well-tended and cared for feel that I really see as being essential to Austen (and I think to Georgette Heyer who I've been reading a lot lately). And I loved the ending. I really didn't like Emily Blunt (sp?) in this movie. She feels way too rigid and it doesn't work.

Have you seen it? What did you think?

I saw the Jane Austen Book Club as soon as it hit theatres in September (I read the book in two days over the summer). I love both the movie and the book. I think that Emily Blunt's character Prudie was meant to seem rigid. I think she was going through each day with a masque on that did not represent who she really was. She was in an unhappy marriage, with a husband who just cancelled their trip to Paris due to an irrevelant business meeting or trip. Going to Paris has been her lifelong dream. However she must still manage to go through the day, teach French class to hormonal teenagers, and come home in the evening to her husband. I think she feels trapped and knows of no other way to get through it that to keep her emotions carefully contained. It seems typical of alot of Austen's heroines to keep their emotions carefully contained rather than cause a scene. Think of Elinor in Sense and Sensibility.

I did not like this movie very much. The rigid girl was my favorite because she was right on with her analysis of Austen's work. Plus, she was the best dressed and most attractive of all characters. That is just my opinion. A lot of people liked the movie but it was less than average to me.
