Obviously there are those who do not register what they are reading. Charlotte Lucas was the eldest daughter of Sir William & Lady Lucas. They had several children, most noticeably beside Charlotte was her sister Maria, who with Sir William and Elizabeth went to Rosings Park to join Mr and Mrs Collins for 6 weeks.Sir William was by no means rich, and by Charlotte's marrying Mr Collins it enabled her sisters to "come out" early in the hope of finding husbands.
It was not Mr Darcy with 5 daughters it was Mr Bennet, Entailment went back to the 13th century in England, and simply put it was to stop an estate being split up upon the death of the owner, by deeding the property to his nearest eldest male relation. Who got the lot. Should the land owner have 5 sons, the property would NOT be split amongst them; the eldest son got everything and his younger brothers nothing and had to rely on the largesse of their elder brother or marry a rich heiress.
Mr Darcy was the only son of a very rich old non titled family, so rich in fact he married above his station in life to the Lady Ann, a daughter of an earl and Lady Catherine's sister. Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy, inherited all of his father estate, however his father did leave a fortune of £30,000.00.00d to his daughter Georgiana. A fortune of this size would ensure that she would attract a gentleman of high quality, possibly titled or ennobled but pecuniarly embarrassed.

I hope this helps Olivia Renneker in her understanding this work. She may if she wishes e-mail with any concerns she may have - Brian Smith

Help needed for a critical essay

Hi! I am currently an undergrad Enlgish student hoping to pursue a graduate degree in 19th Century British Literature. This semester I am taking a class on Jane Austen. For my critical essay I am writing a paper on Pride & Prejudice and the different variations that have been published based on it. I love the different versions that I have read; however, some scholars believe that these remakes of Austen's novel are actually "basterdizing" Jane Austen. I looking for feedback from Austen lovers and whether you agree or disagree. Also, what is it about Pride and Prejudice that inspires others so many continuations and variations? I know what my opinion is but I want to get feedback from others for my essay. Thanks! - Kimberly Allen

help

I would like to email these questions to Ms. Berdoll but her website doesn't have an email address listed.

1. In Miss Austin's book, Elizabeth's friend married Mr. Collins because she felt she was a burden to her parents (thereby inferring they were not well off). In Ms. Berdoll's book, her father was successful in business. Since she was an only child, that could not have strained her parents finances. Why would she then have married Mr. Collins?

2. I obviously don't understand "entailed property". Mr. Darcy is not a duke, earl baron baronette, or viscount. Why then couldn't his property be left to his daughters? His sister inherited a lot and so did Lady Catherine's daughter. Guess it is a good thing I live in the US. - Olivia Renneker

Reading Jane Austen

I highly recommend that ALL fans of Jane Austen's writings read "Reading Jane Austen" by Mona Scheuermann. I am reading this, and am almost finished, and it has helped me appreciate and further understand Jane's writings and the importance of morals and right conduct/behavior during the Regency era in which Jane Austen lived and wrote. - Daniel Mendell
