Jane and the Spoils of Stoneleigh Reader Reviews

Review by Linda Waldemar, February 22, 2001
This is a short story in a book of mystery stories. Jane's cousin, James Leigh must find the spoils so that he can inherit the Stoneleigh Abbey after the death of a relative. It happens that Jane, Cassandra and Mrs. Austen are visiting him when the death occurs.  He hastens, taking all his guests with him, to take possession of the Abbey. A murder has occurred some 20 years previously. Unraveling the mystery of the spoils leads to the knowledge that the killer had been wrongly identified.  Jane helps to solve the mystery by interpreting a poem left as a clue. This poem and the other incidenets are taken right from the Mysteries of Udolpho. Jane and Cassandra's knowledge of  that novel help them to solve the mystery.  This is a short, slight read. Not as good as her novels, but a pleasant way to spend an hour or so.
